LaFortune Park Looking Forward to Indoor Tennis Courts

Posted: Updated:

It wasn't that long ago that LaFortune's tennis courts, weren't that much to look at.

"Twelve courts that were built in the 60's and 70's," said Tulsa county commissioner Fred Perry.

But since 2008, a $2.2 million multi-phase project has put the oompf back in LaFortune's serve.

"We now have 18 brand new courts," said Perry.

A transition that translates into the bottom line when it comes to attracting more tournaments, and more players.

"The kids participation has really soared," said tennis director Melissa McCorkle.

One of those kids with the tennis bug is 9 year-old Katie.

"I'm thinking about becoming a pro," she said.

Yeah, that's right. Take her match today for instance.

"Uhm, the person I was playing against forfeited. Wow, you must be intimidating. I don't know what that means, but yeah," she said.

Also intimidating, the power duo of Callie and Victoria, who remember the not so glory days of the old courts.

"It's like a fresh start, it's nicer to play so you feel better about how you're playing," said Callie.

Officials are now trying to raise even more money to transform an old basketball court into Tulsa's first public indoor courts. When does that construction start?

"That starts when we raise another $730,000," said Perry.

Donations are accepted. The indoor facility would mean tennis year round.
