High Temps Brutal on Gardens

Posted: Updated:

Three weeks ago John McClain's tomatoes were looking spectacular.

"I'm watering every day," he said.

With the heat starting to bear down, John was trying to strategize.

"Gonna need some hay on top of them cause the tomatoes are burning, sun so hot, burning," he said.

And sure enough, that fireball sky transformed his garden.

"Everything's burned up," he said.

His tomatoes? Done. His okra? Shaky.

"Uh, I watered this morning and see what it looks like," he said.

That's with daily watering, with the new every other day rationing?

"If you miss a day, you know really what it's going to look like, gonna look like that," he said.

And that's just the effect of the heat on his garden, he's also got livestock.

"Look like I might get rid of all my cattle. Really?  Yeah. We don't get no rain I'm gonna get rid of everything thing I got," he said.

The sun has burned up most of the grass, and the price of hay has skyrocketed from $35 for a round bale.

"And I ain't gonna buy that $50 hay," he said.

The only one enjoying this weather, John's dog Ruger, playing fetch in the pond, which by the way...

"Where we're standing now was all water? Yeah, this was all water here," he said.

The fury of the sun, from vanishing tomatoes to disappearing cattle.

"That's a pretty cow, yeah, that one there's gonna be hamburger," he said.
