Heisman Winners Help The American Red Cross

Posted: Updated:

Red Cross blood supplies are at their lowest point in 15 years.  But they have help coming their way! The American Red Cross is hosting their 3rd Annual "Heismans to the Rescue" event Wednesday afternoon.

Former Heisman winners, Steve Owens, Billy Sims and Jason White will be at the Red Cross headquarters at 10151 E. 11th Street from noon till 2 P.M. to bring attention to the need for blood.

"As we've done for the past few years, Billy, Jason and I are helping the Red Cross bring attention to the need for blood," said Steve Owens, the 1969 Heisman winner and Norman businessman. "What a great opportunity to make a difference and remember donating blood just takes an hour of your time. It will make you a hero to me and to those your donation impacts."

Public support from the organization's late-June appeal helped temporarily stop a decline in the blood supply. However, the mid-week Independence Day and extreme summer weather have contributed to a decrease in donations lately.

To donate blood, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit www.redcrossblood.org for more information or to make an appointment. Every blood type is needed to ensure the Red Cross maintains an adequate blood supply. A blood donor card or driver's license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Donors must have general good health, weigh at least 110 pounds and be at least 17 years old (16 with a completed Parental Consent Form). Many donors are eligible to give blood every 56 days.
