East Tulsa -
University of Oklahoma Heisman Trophy winners donated their time to greet blood donors at the Tulsa Chapter of the American Red Cross on Wednesday.
It was part of the Tulsa Chapter of the American Red Cross' 2012 'Heismans to the Rescue' blood donation campaign.
Red Cross blood supplies are at their lowest point in 15 years, so three Heisman Trophy recipients are working with the Red Cross to bring attention to the need for blood.
OU Heisman winners Steve Owens, Billy Sims, and Jason White were on hand to sign autographs and encourage donors at the Tulsa Red Cross headquarters at 10151 East 11th Street from 10:30 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.
They will be there to greet blood donors on Thursday from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. as well.
With extreme heat keeping some donors at home and severe storms forcing the cancellation of dozens of blood drives earlier in the month, the American Red Cross continues to have an emergency need for donors of all blood types.
"It's been a long, hot summer for the Red Cross for blood collection," said Jan Hale, Communications Manager for the Tulsa Chapter of the Red Cross.
"We're really glad to see July in the rearview mirror," said Hale, "but August is going to be just as hot."
Donors received commemorative 'Heismans to the Rescue' T-shirts, and they were entered to win prizes such as footballs autographed by Owens, Sims, and White.
Donors must have general good health, weigh at least 110 pounds, and be at least 17 years old. 16-year-olds with signed parental consent forms may also donate.
Many donors are eligible to give blood every 56 days.
People interested in donating blood may call 800-RED-CROSS or visit www.redcrossblood.org for more information or to make an appointment.
The Heisman Trophy is awarded annually to the player deemed the most outstanding player in collegiate football.
