Tulsa, OK -

Tulsa students will get out school early on the last Friday of the month as part of a new early release program approved this week.

The Tulsa Public Schools Board of Education approved the early release days at their meeting on Monday. District officials say the program will allow for more professional development time for faculty and staff.

"We are excited at the opportunity to be able to give our teachers and principals more time together, as this will help put TPS on the road to improved student achievement," Superintendent Dr. Keith Ballard said.

At elementary schools, students will be dismissed at 1 p.m. on the last Friday of the month; middle and junior high school students will leave school 2 hours early at 1:20 p.m. or 1:50 p.m. (depending on the school); and high school students will be dismissed at 1:50 p.m.

Early release days begin Friday, Sept. 28, 2012. The district will not have an early release day in August, December or May.

Lunch will be served prior to dismissal. School start times will remain as they are currently. Buses will run at the release times.

The dates for early release for the 2012-13 school year are as follows:

  • Sept. 28, 2012
  • Oct. 26
  • Nov. 30
  • Jan. 25, 2013
  • Feb. 22
  • March 29
  • April 26
