Representatives from the nation's auto manufacturers are in Oklahoma City to meet with Governor Mary Fallin. They plan to discuss a request from nearly two dozen states. Those states are requesting that auto makers produce more natural gas-powered vehicles for use in state fleets.
The manufacturers are meeting Wednesday at the Oklahoma History Center and will discuss the multistate RFP with procurement experts and hear a presentation from Gov. Mary Fallin.
Fallin and Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper have led the effort to get auto manufacturers to produce more affordable vehicles that run on compressed natural gas. Twenty-two states have expressed support of the proposal.
With 123,000 CNG vehicles in the nation, and 1,000 fueling stations, the governors hope that this new commitment will help overcome the obstacles, including limited infrastructure and consumer demand, which may be holding automakers back from producing a wider variety of CNG vehicles.
Governor Fallin says the objective behind the effort is to let the manufacturers "know that states mean business and are strongly committed to the use of CNG vehicles in state fleets."
