Healthcare Reform and Birth Control

Posted: Updated:

Women don't just talk about hair in the beauty shop. In fact they may talk about birth control. and. exactly how much it costs

"On a scale of 1 to 10 probably an 8," said Patricia Gamble of Moxie Salon.

Gamble says birth control ranks at the top of concerns--just like a woman's hair.

"Theres a lot of women out there who need those services done, but can't afford it because of economic values going on right now," she said.

But now your co-pay for birth control, may be eliminated thanks to the Affordable Care Act.

Some women pay ten, twenty, or even forty dollars a month for birth control co-payments--and you should see relief now.

"On the technical side, these are complicated systems and very complicated laws and so if there is any problems people have getting something covered they think should be covered, they definitely need to contact insurer to make sure that everything is in place and working as intended," said James Mills, counsel for the Insurance Department.

He says there are some companies that were grand fathered in. If your policy has been in effect since 2010 you may not qualify, just yet.

Women say it's important--

"I don't want to have anymore kids, that are not planned, because these were not planned. And I love them with all my life, but if I do have another, it's gonna be planned.  So if I didn't have the money I'd find a way to get it," said Chelsea Bickford, a mom.

In 2014--all insurance companies will eliminate co-pays on women's birth control.

Until then--stylists like Patricia will listen, just like they always have.

If you have a problem or a dispute, the insurance department has a team to help you out. They even have people there to answer questions specifically for seniors.
