OSU Basketball Wins First Game In Spain

Posted: Updated:
Four players reached double figures and every player scored as Oklahoma State defeated Barcelona Select, 95-72, here Friday afternoon in the Cowboys' foreign tour opener. Junior Markel Brown and sophomore Le'Bryan Nash each scored 18 points for OSU, leading the team.

"Lob Stilly" took the tour international, as the Pokes scored 16 points on eight alley-oop dunks. Despite Barcelona's experience and height advantage, OSU used their athleticism and some timely long-range shooting to wear down the Catalonians.

The Barcelona Select team is made up of professional basketball players from several teams in the Barcelona area. One of the players, Darryl Middleton, played collegiately for Baylor.

Nash recorded a double-double with 10 rebounds to go with his 18 points. He was 7-of-13 from the floor and 4-of-5 from the charity stripe. Brown was 7-of-16 from the field, including 2-of-5 from beyond the arc, and also recorded four rebounds and three assists. Freshman Marcus Smart chipped in 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting, including two treys, grabbed four rebounds and dished out four assists.

Another freshman, Kamari Murphy, matched Nash with a game-high 10 rebounds, including eight defensive. He also scored six points, making all three shots from the floor. Sophomore Cezar Guerrero played 17 minutes off the bench, scoring 10 points while dishing out seven assists and grabbing five boards.

Oklahoma State trailed by 10 at the end of the first quarter as the Barcelona Select team hit six three-pointers en route to a 30-20 lead. However, the Cowboys outscored Barcelona, 28-10 in the second period to take a 48-40 lead. The lead grew in the third to 70-55, and OSU outscored Barcelona 25-17 in the final period for the 95-72 score.

As a team, the Cowboys shot 38-of-74 from the floor, good for 51.4 percent, including 9-of-26 (34.6 percent) from beyond the arc. OSU was 10-of-13 from the free-throw line, but struggled at times on defense, committing 31 fouls, leading to a 26-of-37 performance at the line from Barcelona.

Oklahoma State will return to action on Sunday evening as the Cowboys take on this same squad, with the addition of 3-4 players who will be returning to the area over the weekend. Tipoff is set for 7 pm (12 pm CT).
