Firefighters Battle Massive Blaze in London

Firefighters battled a massive fire at an east London recycling center on Sunday.

Fire Brigades from Dagenham, Barking, East Ham, and surrounding stations were dispatched to an industrial fire at the Hunts Waste recycling center on Chequers Lane in Dagenham just after 1:00 p.m. GMT.

The burning recycling center is located about seven miles from Olympic Park.

"We've not seen a fire of this size in London for several years," said London Fire Commissioner Ron Dobson.

More than 200 firefighters and 45 engines battled the fire and brought it under control by 5:00 p.m. GMT.

Investigators were unsure how the fire started but continued to work throughout the night to dampen down the Hunts Waste building.

Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) is six hours ahead of Central Time.

Dagenham is a large suburb in Essex, forming the eastern part of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham.
