Fire Aftermath - Coping With Life in A Tent

Posted: Updated:

Unfortunately, scenes of a homes charred remains are no longer shocking. The result of a daily deluge of Mannford fire wreckage. But what does grab the attention, is the camp site set up in the midst of it.

"Are you really living like this?

That is the question that Cindy laws has heard repeatedly over the past week as you take a tour of her new home, including a tent for her son, a bathroom tent, and a shower tent.

"You just, come here we got it rigged, you just turn it on and you take a shower," she said.

Their old home was not insured. They were needing some roof work before they could get any. A stack of burnt up shingles shows they were almost there.

"I was so close to getting insurance, just so close," she said.

So the plan is, what is the plan, we do this until? "Until we can get something to put on the land to live in," she said.

Do you have a mortgage payment coming due? "Yeah, I'm still paying it, I don't care, I ain't gonna lose my land," she said.

In the face of all this, optimism has become a family motto.

"You know the only thing I can do is go up," she said.

"It can only go up," echoed her 16 year-old son Cody. He has been helping neighbors clean up as he juggles the demands of school.

"One of my classmates donated a little mini-fridge to us," he said.

Making due. One family's fight after the fire.

"I really hope FEMA comes through for us, you know, for all of us, it's not just me that I worry about," she said.
