TFD: Kids Playing With Lighters Start Fire, 3 Injured

Posted: Updated:

An apartment fire injures at least three people including two Tulsa firefighters.

The blaze broke out this morning at the Fairmont Terrace Apartments at 58th and Owasso.

"And then we heard a big old boom like a big old dynamite!"

An explosion rattles a south side neighborhood as flames shoot high into the air.

Jeremy Cox witnessed the fire. "It was just crazy. There was a lot of stuff going on. Flames everywhere. The sky was filled with smoke. It was intense."

Residents at the Fairmont Terrace Apartments watched helpless as their belongings burned.

Henry Sutherland lost everything. "I left my Levis in there, my shoes, all that good stuff, my phone, game center. All that is gone. It's gone."

At least 12 units were heavily damaged in one three-story building.

A fire wall kept the flames from spreading into 12 more.

"I looked out my balcony window. And I heard sirens and I looked over and seen the flames shooting up. And that's when I took off outside."

Brandy Hernandez lived in another building. Her home was spared and her family is safe.

"I feel sorry for the people who had to go through this. And I thank God that my son's okay."

One civilian suffered smoke inhalation and two firefighters were hurt.

One had back problems. The other had burns to his leg. Their injuries were not considered serious.

Firefighters said the fire was started when children were playing with lighters.

A Red Cross shelter will open for those displaced by the fires.

It's at the Crosstown Church of Christ at Admiral and Harvard.
