Park Point, MN -

Lightning struck a sailboat with seven passengers on Lake Superior Saturday evening, critically injuring a nine-year-old boy.

The incident happened around 5:30 p.m. ET.

Officials had to perform CPR on the scene to restart the boy's heart.

Several local agencies, including the U.S. Coast Guard, responded to the scene.

"We always want to use the upmost water safety, especially when there's lightning," said Assistant Chief Jarry Keppers of the Duluth Police Department. "Sometimes it's difficult when it comes up quickly like this did, but we ask people to keep an eye on the weather forecast."

It is unclear how many of the other six family members were critically injured, and there is no word on their condition.
