Neighborhood Watch Program Sees Results

Posted: Updated:

When we met them back in March they were just beginning.

"Getting organized is the first step," said Carol Bush with the crime commission.

Neighbors of Bob and Nancy Strait, starting a neighborhood watch, with plenty of passion.

"I'm not gonna let it be my neighbor, or anybody else," said Charles Wheeler.

Five months later...

"We've made probably about 20% difference in crime from then till now," he said.

They are known as Strait Neighbors in honor of their lost friends.

"We've come a long way," said Diane Johnson.

They are constantly on the lookout.

"We don't hesitate to get on the phone," said Myron Washington.

When an unfamiliar car stopped near Diane's house...

"I went and got the license tags, but they had run out of gas, so that was ok, you know," she said.

It was not ok though, when the caught some people looting the memorial site for the Strait's.

"They were stealing teddy bears and candles and plants, and we had to tell them that's not yours you need to put that back," said Wheeler.

In addition to stopping crime, they've gotten to know each other. Before the watch group Myron knew three of his neighbors. Now?

"I know probably about 14, 15 new people," he said.

A genuine sense of the word neighbor in the neighborhood.

"I know someone will help me if I need it," said Johnson.

Looking out for each other with that same passion when they started.

"My neighborhood is not the neighborhood to commit crime," said Wheeler.
