Drillers Snap Losing Streak, Beat Midland

Posted: Updated:

The Tulsa Drillers were mired in an offensive slump during a five-game losing streak. Both the slump and the streak ended Sunday night in Midland, Texas. The Drillers exploded for 13 hits and 8 runs and defeated the Midland RockHounds 8-2 at Citibank Field.

The output supplied Tulsa starting pitcher Parker Frazier with a night of rare offensive support. The Tulsa native took advantage to record his fifth win of the season.

The RockHounds actually scored first in the contest, plating a run in the bottom of the first inning. Conner Crumbliss led off with a base hit and scored on a one-out double by Anthony Aliotti, the hero of Midland's win on Saturday night.

The Drillers tied the score in the top of the third when ORU-product Tim Torres led off with a double, stole third base and scored on a ground out by Warren Schaeffer.

They took the lead with a two-run fifth. Lars Davis opened the inning with a double and scored on a base hit by Torres. After an errant pickoff attempt by pitcher Sonny Gray, Torres scored on a two-out hit by Angelys Nina to make it 3-1.

Three more runs in the sixth upped Tulsa's lead to five. The inning began with consecutive singles by Nolan Arenado and Ben Paulsen. Kiel Roling made it three straight hits, scoring Arenado with another single. After Mike Zuanich struck out, Davis brought Paulsen home with the fourth hit of the inning. Torres capped the uprising with his third hit of the game, scoring Roling.

Arenado's 11th home run of the season made it 7-1 in the seventh inning.

The Drillers capped their big offensive night in the eighth when Roling doubled and scored on a base hit from Zuanich.

It was more than enough offensive support for Tulsa native Frazier. The right-hander, who entered the game as the Texas League's leader in innings pitched, worked 7 2/3 innings. He allowed only two runs and did not issue a walk while striking out four.

The outing marked the 10th straight game that Frazier has pitched at least six innings.

Eight of Tulsa's nine starters had at least one hit in the game. The three hits from Torres led the attack, while Arenado, Roling and Davis picked up two each.

The Drillers will conclude their six-game road trip with their series finale in Midland Monday night. Tulsa will send Josh Outman (1-5, 4.40 ERA) to the mound, while Midland will counter with Matt McSwain (1-0, 8.64 ERA). First pitch in west Texas is scheduled for 6:30PM.
