Tulsa, Oklahoma -
The more than 40,000 students in the Tulsa Public School district resume classes today.
Superintendent Dr. Keith Ballard says the school district will place an increased emphasis on improving student performance this year.
"We're going to have a really strong focus on student achievement," Ballard said. "We weren't where we wanted to be last year."
Ballard said the district's greatest challenge is dealing with students are not in school. He encouraged parents to make great efforts to ensure their children attend class every day.
Today was Ballard's 41st first day of school as an educator and he said he is just as excited as he was the first time.
"It's such an exciting time," he said.
Ballard is his last year as the district's top administrator. He announced earlier this year that he will retire at the end of school year.
