Tulsa, OK -

School kids are repeating an unsafe practice that could get someone killed - they're crossing a busy Tulsa street to get to and from school.

It's happening along 21st St. near Garnett where we have reported this problem before.

The problem is in Tulsa City Council District 6.

Councilor Skip Steele says, "I don't see a whole lot has been done about it."

Steele agreed to meet with us when we told him about the problem along 21st and 108th E. Ave.

"So today, we're out here the first day of school to see if anything has really changed," Steele says.

As we waited for school to let out, Councilor Steele watched the previous stories we had done and saw young children crossing busy 21st St. without a crossing guard or even an adult.

Steele says, "There's a need for them to cross the street, which is concerning that any elementary school kid would even be crossing at a major street.  That's just unimaginable to me."

Then came the moment of truth, right before our very eyes, "You can tell by their behavior that they are going to cross that street," Steele says.

Three young girls make it across a street that has a posted speed of 40 miles per hour.

It can be very deceiving, even for an adult, how fast a car is coming at 40 mph.  You have no idea how much space you need to get across.

Councilor Steele says he plans to bring up the issue at a committee that makes recommendations on how to make Tulsa better.
