North Tulsa -
Police are continuing to investigate the attempted abduction of an 11-year-old girl at a park in North Tulsa.
Police said the girl was too shook up to be thoroughly interviewed Tuesday night, so they planned to talk to her Wednesday. They hope her descriptions will help them find the three men who dragged her into the bushes, held a gun to her head, and touched her inappropriately.
It happened around 6 p.m. Tuesday when the girl was sitting on a bench at a park off Latimer and Greenwood. She had been spending time with friends. Once her friends left, police said the attack happened, and a Langston security guard intervened when he heard her screaming.
Channel 8 spoke with neighbors and park visitors Wednesday. Many said they were surprised to hear about such a traumatic incident in an otherwise safe neighborhood. Others told us they have felt unsafe at B.S. Roberts Park before.
Everyone Channel 8 spoke with said they had never seen a security presence at the park before. They all said they would like to see more given Tuesday's attack.
Zenobia Mayo walks the trail at the park with her daughter and grandson often. She said there are sometimes groups of young men loitering that make her feel uncomfortable.
"When we see them, we just come back to the car and we won't walk on at that point," said Mayo.
Channel 8 called Tulsa's Parks and Recreation to learn more about the security at the park but had not heard a response as of 3:15 p.m.
Channel 8 learned from Langston University in a press release that patrolling the park falls under the jurisdiction of OSU - Tulsa. Langston University said the security guard who found the girl was Corporal Stephen Wayne Antwine.
Police have not yet made any arrests.
