Downtown Tulsa -

Operation Aware prevention educators discussed with parents how best to protect their children from online predators Wednesday night.

Boston Avenue United Methodist Church hosted the class for parents at 1301 South Boston Avenue in Tulsa from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

According to Operation Aware Lead Prevention Educator Jeni Dolan, some Boston Avenue UMC youth members encountered problems when someone grabbed their Facebook pictures online and created bogus profiles using their names and pictures.

So, Boston Avenue UMC invited Operation Aware to educate their youth members' parents on what steps their kids can take to protect their online privacy.

"Everything they put out there is no longer private," said Ms. Dolan. "Anybody can take your picture and post it anywhere if you post it online."

Dolan recommended that kids not use the 'Check In' feature on Facebook and not to post where they have been until after the fact.

"You don't know who's looking," said Dolan.

Operation Aware is a non-profit organization that equips youth, through prevention education, with the knowledge and skills to make positive life choices. They provide drug, violence, and risk prevention education to children and teens in the classroom from pre-kindergarten through high school.

Operation Aware was founded in 1979.

Boston Avenue United Methodist Church has existed at South 5th Street and South Boston Avenue since 1906.
