Glenpool Fire Department believes the grass fire started near an oil filled pit near 33rd West Avenue & 126th Street South. With these dry conditions everything around the area was an easy target to burn and residents in the area started to panic.
"I looked up and all I seen was a cloud of smoke. I said oh my gosh there is a fire and we dropped everything," says resident, Carolyn Minnich.
Carolyn Minnich says she came to her neighbors to get her husband for lunch and that's when the smoke filled the sky. She says they were the ones to call it in and within minutes they heard sirens coming to help. With the flames getting closer the residents got more scared.
"I'm a little nervous about losing everything I own," says Marshall Minnich.
Glenpool, Sapulpa, and Liberty Mounds Fire Departments were the ones on the scene. The oil filled pit is nothing but black and white ash but since it was so close to other oil equipment and the sites these firefighters saw in Creek County they knew once the call came in they had to move fast.
"The quicker we can get here with units and respond. The more efficient it is putting out the fire and we don't have those type of situations," says Glenpool Fire Department Deputy Chief Bryan Wood.
Some residents did fear the flames would jump the road so they started watering down their property. But the fire departments quick response put these residents minds at ease.
"I think they are moving pretty quick. They are on top of their job. They are doing well," says Marshall.
The winds and dry conditions did nothing to help the firefighters.
"We do the best we can do curtain conditions. Us being under the fire ban, high winds, low humidity, it's a very dangerous situation," says Woods.
The crews were worked in shifts to make sure that no one was overheated. Even though the flames got close to homes, no structures were lost and the resident couldn't be more happy with the outcome.
"Thank you guys. Thank you so much. Bless you," says Carolyn.
Glenpool Fire Department was able to use their new truck that has foam on it to contain the fire. The foam makes it fast and easier to put out flames like the ones they were dealing with. The direct cause of this fire is still under investigation.
