Labor Day Weekend Warning: Toxic Algae In Some Lakes

Posted: Updated:

As we approach the labor day weekend, there are a number of things that could put a damper on your fun:

Hurricane Isaac, the burn ban and now blue green algae.

Warnings have gone out to numerous lakes statewide including Fort Gibson, Keystone, Eufaula and Tenkiller in our area.

The levels in 12 lakes total are considered toxic in certain places.

So it's being advised that you and your pets avoid contact with the water.

A number of people got sick in Oklahoma last year.

And experts say the drought has a big impact.

Kent Dunlap with the Corp of Engineers said Monday, "We don't get a lot of rainfall. So the lakes will actually get clearer. Which you think is a good thing. But that allows sunlight to go deeper into the water and get to where those nutrients are, and that's when you get these blooms."

To read about conditions at your favorite lake, we've set up a link to the right of this story.
