"We manufacture these here in Tulsa, OK," said Court Newkirk of Blue Energy Fuels, his company opening a CNG filling station on Main street in Owasso and drawing attention to the rapidly growing convenience of the fuel.
"Two and a half years ago we had basically 41 stations, public stations in the state of Oklahoma, by this time next year there should be close to almost 90," he said.
One of the newest, is located in the city of Tulsa's West Yard near the 21st street bridge, where the price is an even lower $1.50.
"Last year driving about 65,000 miles I think we spent about $2,500 on fuel," said Ted Massad. He sells and converts vehicles to CNG at an average price around $10,000 but that's before the state's 50% tax credit.
"With that being 50% that means that you're actual out of pocket expense would be about $5,000 on average," he said.
Which means that in roughly two to three years the conversion would pay for itself in savings at the gasoline pump. Despite those benefits, it wasn't exactly hopping at either station we visited. More like a ghost town. So make your pitch Mr. Newkirk to help convert the masses.
"Remember natural gas is an Oklahoma product and the equipment that makes natural gas is made in Oklahoma. Oklahoma jobs," he said.
