Job Losses And Job Shuffling At American Airlines

Posted: Updated:

Uncertainty best summarizes the future of American Airlines. We know layoffs are coming, but we don't know to whom.

Employees at American Airlines are being forced to consider questions never before in the realm of possibilities.

"Do I want to uproot? Have we been here too long? Are my kids a certain age, what level are they in school? Do I want to take the layoff and go get another job?

With 22 years at American ,Vice plans to stay in Tulsa, but he still won't feel job security.

"You could get bumped down to lower classification and lose pay."

Another factor that comes into play is seniority among other TWU mechanics at Americans three Texas facilities. Will they want to move to Oklahoma and bump other workers out.

"More than likely they don't want to uproot their families and come to Oklahoma."

Union Representative John Hewitt.

"More than likely those AFW mechanics are going to try to bump those places first so that's where your most senior people will go."

American has notified more than 29-hundred employees in Tulsa who could lose their jobs. Hewitt says the number is inflated but he won't speculate on a final number. He will only say what we already know, that 120 fleet service clerks jobs are going away regardless. And from there, no one knows.

"We hope that people pray for us and for this company."

The first round of layoffs happen November 16th followed by a second round in December.
