Consumers Spent More in 2011 Than 2010

Posted: Updated:

It appears the sluggish economy isn't stopping people from spending money. A survey from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows consumers spending on household expenditures rose more than three percent between 20-10 and 20-11. That includes things such as food, transportation costs and health care spending.

It's the first year spending has increased since the height of the Great Recession in 2008.
Overall, the survey found average annual spending rose to 49-thousand, 705 dollars.
However, it's important to note, the rise in spending last year barely outpaced inflation, which increased more than three percent.
