An eighth grader at Stillwater Junior High School fatally shot himself Wednesday morning in the middle of a hallway.

A school resource officer heard a gunshot 10 minutes before the bell rang to start the school day and found the student dead in the hallway, Police Capt. Randy Dickerson said.

Police identified the student as 13-year-old Cade Poulos. A memorial page was  set up on Facebook and had more than 2,800 "likes" within two hours. The page appears to have been taken down and another launched this afternoon.

The Facebook page contains posts suggesting that Poulos had been bullied. Police said it is too early in the investigation to comment on what could have prompted Poulos to shoot himself.

Superintendent Ann Caine said the district had no record of Poulos being bullied.

"I've been in education 34 years, have never had a situation like this," Superintendent Caine said. "You never are ready for a day like this."

The school district quickly implemented its emergency response plan. The junior high and a nearby elementary campus were placed on lockdown as a precaution. Once authorities were confident the gunshot was self-inflicted, the lockdown was lifted and students were transferred by bus to Cimarron Plaza, officials said.

Parents were notified and allowed to pick up their children. Classes were canceled at the junior high for the remainder of the day.

Caine said counseling services are available for students, families and staff through Stillwater Schools, OSU Counseling Psychology Clinic (405-744-8959) and Payne County Youth Services (405-377-3380).

The junior high houses eighth and ninth grades and has an enrollment of about 750 students, officials said.
