Stillwater Student Suicide: Knowing The Warning Signs

Posted: Updated:

Wednesday's student suicide in Stillwater brings to light the importance of warning knowing the signs of suicide.

Local experts tell us, unfortunately, it is possible to know all of the signs and still not be able to see them in your loved one before it's too late.

"Because you can't be with them all of the time," says Carrie Little with Family & Children's Services.

Those behaviors include becoming withdrawn, giving away prized possessions and saying things like "you'd be better off without me".

If your friend or relative shows any of these warning signs, talk to them about it.

Urge them to get help and don't keep it a secret.

Little told ktul.com, "You might be feeling like, if you're a friend of the person, 'that's a good friend thing to do', to keep that secret. But it's a better friend thing to do if you let an adult know that something is going on, so they can get the help  that he or she needs."

To reach Family and Children Services' COPES hotline call 918-744-4800. It's available 24 hours a day.
