Lawmaker Hopes To Repeal Oklahoma's Blasphemy Law

Posted: Updated:

A state lawmaker says he plans to repeal a century-old Oklahoma law that makes blasphemy a crime.

The law was established in 1910 and makes it a misdemeanor to say or print words that "ridicule the Christian religion or any other religion."

Republican Rep. Randy Grau of Edmond says, he was prompted in part by violent protests over the release of an anti-Islamic film.

Grau says, while he does not support the disparagement of any religion, he believes it's necessary to stand up for free speech "even when it is not popular".
