The Tulsa County Sheriff's Office is out in full force at the fair each year and they're using something a little different for people to notice them on the midway. On top of their golf carts they have placed big stuffed pigs.
"I never thought that having a pink pig on top would be better than a siren or red lights," says Sergeant Mark Stevens.
The idea came when Stevens was stopped by a vendor telling him they should use the pigs.
"We got the pig put it up on top and it's unbelievable what people think of the pig. Older folks smile at you and wave and give you a thumbs up and the kids go nuts because they can see that pig from miles around," says Stevens.
The goal is for people to know it's them driving around so if you need something you know where to look. They have had these pigs on the carts for three years now. This year the deputies added a female pig for the female deputies. Stevens says sometimes the deputies don't think it's funny at first but they quickly realize how much fun they can have driving around talking with the community.
If you are out at the fair and see the big pig moving down the midway, you now know who you are watching. The Sheriff's Office says it's all about having fun and relating with the community in a new way.
it's all about having fun and relating to the community in a new way.
"Back in the day the cliche of a pig and law enforcement was negative. In today's society, it's been around for so long, it has no negative relevance to us," says Major Shannon Clark.
