Reminder: Final Construction Phase at Lewis Avenue Interchage Begins

Posted: Updated:
Tulsa, OK -

Those looking to avoid traffic between Riverside Drive and Yale Avenue should have alternative routes as the final phase of a construction project begins today.

We've been following the I-44 widening project through its phases and now we want to remind you again that its fourth and final one will begin at 9 am. Residents are advised to plan around the construction as traffic is expected during their commutes.

All lanes of north and southbound Lewis Avenue will be closed at the I-44 junction until further notice, according to a release. Ramps will remain open and there will still be access to the frontage roads and 51st Street for the time being.

Detours will direct traffic to the I-44/Peoria and I-44/Harvard interchanges. Significant delays can be expected at the Lewis Avenue junction where drivers should plan for extra travel times.

According to the release, the nearly $40 million project is scheduled to take approximately 20 months to complete with incentives in place to expedite the construction. The new interstate will shift to the south of the existing highway and widen I-44 from four to six lanes between Peoria and Harvard avenue.

Other work includes improvements to Lewis Avenue ramps and frontage roads, replacing the Lewis Avenue bridge over the interstate and aesthetic work in the corridor.
