The School Of San Miguel Reaches A Milestone

Posted: Updated:

A unique Tulsa school, has taken the next step in it's growth.

It has moved into a new facility, so the students have a better opportunity for learning.

The School of San Miguel is on Admiral, just east of Lewis.

It takes kids who have a 50-50 chance of graduating high school.

But when they leave, they have a better than 50-50 chance of graduating from college.

The middle school classes are now being taught in the new building, after the school made a humble start in an old church basement.

San Miguel President, Joe O'Connor, says they were grateful to have that space, but it did have some shortcomings.

They ranged from a lack of security, to drafty windows and the fact that basement flooded every time there was a big storm.

Their new facility is a far cry from that damp cellar.

It has high ceilings and modern equipment.

Each classroom has a smart board, that can show the teacher's laptop screen and be used for all kinds of teaching techniques.

O'Connor says they are grateful for the broad base of support they received from the community.

It was a struggle, to raise more than a million dollars for the building, in one of the toughest economies in decades.

But he says the generosity of Tulsans of all faiths, help to get the building finished.

While the new facility isn't fancy, it's dry, safe and very functional.

He says that will pay off with better grades.

San Miguel students work year round, with long hours and a big emphasis on reading.

Many of the school's at-risk students, end up as honor students in high school.
