Bixby Police See Increase in Shaken Baby Cases

Posted: Updated:

Parenting isn't child's play. In fact for some people, it's the hardest job they've ever had. Bixby Police say some parents can unfortunately snap. Bixby police say cases of shaken baby syndrome are up. Right now, they're investigating at least two cases. There was only one last year. The act meant to calm a child can kill.

"Some parents are more equipped to handle kids than others," said Claudia Arthrell with Family and Children's Services in Tulsa. She says there's plenty of help available in Green Country to help parents cope. Prevention is key, she says everyone around anyone with a small child can help. "So when you see any of the warning signs of a parent saying I'm exhausted, I don't know what to do, I'm overwhelmed. Sit down with them and say let's call 211 and see what can help you right now," Arthrell explained.

Some Bixby moms say they know how hard it is to raise children, but they're surprised Bixby is seeing more cases of shaken baby syndrome. "I don't know that I know where they're coming from, but people have so much going on in their lives that you probably don't know what they're having to deal with and unfortunately they take it out on those children," said Gayla Cox.

Bixby Police Officer Rene Torres says shaken baby cases are hard to prosecute so no arrests have been made yet. He says the cases in question involve moms and dads between the ages of 20 to 30 years old.
