The seventh annual Cherokee Art Market opened by awarding several artists at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Friday, Oct. 12.

The awards honored Orlando Dugi and Kenneth Williams with Best of Show for "Looking Forward, Looking Back-Mirror Bag."  The bag was entered in the beadwork or quill work category.

"The Cherokee Art Market continues to offer one of the largest prize purses of any Native American art show in the country," said Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Bill John Baker.  "It attracts the country's most talented Native American artists and thousands of art lovers who can catch a glimpse of the finest Native art.  It continues to be a boost to the local economy and supports the continued expression of Native culture and history."

Others honored at the show include Sharon Irla for her painting, "Save Xingu," Troy Jackson in class 2 sculpture, "Cherokee Women Carrying Tradition," and Berdine Begay, "Second Phase" in the textiles category.

The artwork representing more than 45 different tribes will be on display and for sale at the art market through Oct. 14.

The art forms include beadwork, painting, sculptures, textiles and pottery. There will also be a variety of cultural demonstrations and performances at the market.
