A misspelled sign on the side of Sapulpa Public School's administration building brought strange looks from residents in the area.

For three days last week, the sign read, "Sapulpa Public Shcools."

Superintendent Dr. Kevin Burr first told Channel 8 that the sign was the work of pranksters. He thought the incorrect sign was above the entrance he uses everyday. Instead, the letters "shcool" were on the other end of the building.

Burr corrected the original statement Monday to admit it was the error of a third-party installer.

The misspelled sign was put up Wednesday afternoon as school let out for Fall Break. It stayed that way for nearly four days while students and administrators weren't on campus. It was corrected Sunday afternoon once officials were notified.

Superintendent Burr said he wished the sign was the work of vandals, but admitted the district's error. He reiterated that the sign doesn't reflect the quality of Sapulpa's schools.

"We strive to provide excellence in everything we do, every day.   For three and a half days last week, we missed the mark.  We will accept this as our responsibility and will continue to look for ways to do better in the future," Burr wrote in a district-wide e-mail.

Channel 8 staff tried to make contact with school administrators Sunday before the story aired and was posted on KTUL.com. An email was sent to Dr. Burr and calls were made to the district's main offices.
