TU Professor in NYC for Conference Stuck In Hurricane Sandy Aftermath

Posted: Updated:

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - A University of Tulsa psychology professor who is in New York City for a conference on how the media covers natural disasters is now stuck there because of a superstorm called Sandy.

Elana (uh-LAHN'-uh) Newman told The Associated Press that she feels safe in Manhattan - where she was eating dinner with colleagues and friends at what she said was one of the few diners remaining open.

Newman said she could see strong winds - but that cabs were still in operation and she could see people on bicycles making deliveries.

The National Hurricane Center said Monday night that Sandy is a post-tropical storm and losing strength but still has sustained winds at 85 mph.

Newman is part of a conference of journalists discussing interviewing storm victims after the disaster.
