The Lindenwood University community is rallying to support a promising young football player, Sterling Thomas, who suffered a traumatic injury in the Lions' 45-30 victory over Missouri Southern on Saturday.

Thomas, a 5-10, 170-pound cornerback, is in serious condition at a local hospital after sustaining a severe spinal cord injury. He is on track with his recovery, and his parents say being in such good physical condition has helped him to this point.

Along with family members, coaches and teammates have been a constant at the hospital trying to provide support. But Thomas' teammates want to do even more. They will soon begin selling bracelets that say "S.T. #27 – LU Soldier" to assist with the family's expenses. Other university fundraising endeavors are also under way.

"We are going to be there to assist the family in every way possible," said Coach Patrick Ross. "Sterling has a ton of strength and mental toughness. He and his family have a long road ahead of them, but they won't be alone. The team, students, staff, and administration at Lindenwood University will be with them every step of the way."

One of Lindenwood's captains, senior Malach Radigan, said the team is dedicating the remainder of its first MIAA season to Sterling.

"He is our little brother," Radigan said. "From here on out, you'll see 108 football players selling out every play for our little brother and LU Soldier, Sterling Thomas."

Thomas and his family are from Tulsa, Oklahoma. Anyone interested in making a contribution to the Sterling Thomas fund at Lindenwood University should contact Jane Baum at 636-949-4427 or email her at jbaum@lindenwood.edu.
