OSU Men Roll In Exhibition Opener

Posted: Updated:

Six different Cowboys reached double figures and Oklahoma State ran away from an overmatched Ottawa squad as OSU defeated the Braves 109-56 Thursday night in exhibition basketball action.

Freshman Phil Forte and junior-college transfer Kirby Gardner shared game scoring honors with 19 points each. Forte finished the game with five three pointers on 10 attempts, including four of his first five. Gardner was effective as well, making 4-of-6 treys while dishing out three assists.

The unofficial debut of heralded freshman Marcus Smart was impressive as well. The 6-4 point guard scored 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including 2-of-3 from long range. However, he also had six rebounds, six assists, six steals and no turnovers in just 15 minutes of play.

It was a night of newcomers for the Cowboys. Freshman forward Kamari Murphy started in his first collegiate action, recording a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Markel Brown, the veteran of the Pokes, scored 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. Sophomore Le'Bryan Nash finished with 11 points and five assists.

Murphy was the only starter to play more than 22 minutes as he finished with a game-high 30. Gardner, Forte and Christien Sager spent the majority of the game on the court once the game got out of hand. Marek Soucek played 19 minutes and was effective, scoring eight points with six rebounds.

Oklahoma State will open the regular season on Friday, Nov. 9, as the Cowboys host UC Davis in the second game of a doubleheader with the Cowgirls, who play Cal Poly at 5:30 pm.
