OSSAA Looking At Adding Class 7A

Posted: Updated:

Recommendations have been made to the OSSAA Board of Directors to consider adding a new Class 7A, for football only.

16 schools would make up the new Class 7A, including four from our area: Union, Broken Arrow, Jenks, and Owasso.

The problem, at least for the teams in our area, is scheduling.  Union, for example, plays B.A. and Jenks each year in non-district games.

If those schools were in the same district within 7A, which they more than likely would be, those games would become district games.  That makes it extremely difficult to fill out the early part of the schedule with enough non-district games.

The million dollar question is: could the proposal actually pass?

Both Jenks and Broken Arrow say there needs to be work done on this proposal, and that they assume Owasso would agree with them on that note.

Here's where it gets tricky: the 24 teams that would remain in class 6A would surely support the proposal.  That means if just one of the proposed 7A schools were to vote yes - then simple majority would rule.

Here's another interesting note: reportedly there is just one Athletic Director on the rules committee that brought up this whole 7A proposal.

These are the teams that would be slated to move up to the new class:

Jenks
Union
Owasso
Broken Arrow
All schools in Norman, Edmond, and Moore
Putnam City
Putnam City North
Yukon
Mustang.
