Marine Veteran Defends Home from Intruder

Posted: Updated:

In hindsight, the flag displayed with veteran pride on the porch, should have also been seen as a warning.

"Well I was sitting there watching TV and somebody knocked real light on the door," said 77 year-old Marine vet Lloyd Macarty.

So light, it was suspicious, causing him to go get his .32, and by the time he got back to the living room, the "visitor" was trying to break down the door.

"He hit it that hard, so when he hit that door, that's when I shot through the door. He went a hollering and screaming, and I could hear him going clear down the street, hollering," he said.

While this was going on his wife Mary dialed 9-1-1. The cops soon found the intruder with a wound to his abdomen.

"I said well maybe I should have shot 2 or 3 times, and they said no, you done the right thing, you got the point across," he said.

The neighborhood, unfortunately, isn't what it used to be. This was their third break-in in a year. Last time, the burglars stole pain pill.

"You know, you hear in the news all the time about people getting beat up, killed over $20. I thought well if you come in you're going to have a bullet hole," he said.

And as true as the slogan on the postcard, 'Once a Marine, always a Marine,' this 8th rifle company vet was ready for action.

"I'm just like my signs on my storm door say, I'm proud to be American, I and I just felt I was protecting my wife and I by shooting," he said.

The Macarty household. Old glory waving on the porch, an old Marine on patrol, and a brand spanking new peep hole to keep an eye out for thieves.

"I got a bullet hole in my door," he chuckled.
