A fourth grader received a scholarship today at an event announcing the winners of the Kids on College Survey Sweepstakes.
Addison Barnes, a student at Barnes Elementary in Owasso, was selected as the fourth-grade winner along with five other students in Oklahoma. Each of the students will receive $529 toward an Oklahoma 529 College Savings Plan account.
According to the press release, Oklahoma State Treasurer Ken Miller was on hand at Barnes' school to award her the scholarship, which she received after completing a survey that challenged Oklahoma kindergarten through fifth-grade students and their parents to test their knowledge of college and its future costs.
"The Kids on College Survey Sweepstakes is a fun way to gauge why our boys and girls want to go to college and what they believe it will cost," Miller said. "We hope the survey started family conversations about the need to start saving for college, at any age."
In addition to Barnes' scholarship, each of the winner's schools was given $529 toward its arts/music programs on behalf of Gap Stores in Oklahoma.
