Hostess Strike Deadline Looms, Affects Tulsa Workers

Posted: Updated:

Many Hostess employees in Tulsa stood their ground Thursday, continuing to picket outside their employer. Hostess's CEO said earlier this week that if enough workers do not return to work by 4 p.m. central time Thursday, the company might have to liquidate.

"Ever since I've been here 20 years, I've been giving and giving and giving," said employee Steve Metcalf.

Metcalf, along with many of his co-workers both here and nationally, have been striking since Friday. He told Channel 8 he has accepted pay cuts in the past. However, he said the new contracts will cut pay, hike insurance rates, and shrink pensions.

Metcalf said he had planned to use his pension money to pay for his son's college education.

The protesting workers told Channel 8 there are at least 100 Hostess workers in Tulsa. Some chose to work Thursday and some did not.

Hostess released this statement Thursday: "BCTGM leadership appears willing to sacrifice Hostess Brands employees for the sake of preventing other bakery companies from asking for similar concessions."

According to the Associated Press, Hostess Brands Inc. will most likely not announce a decision until Friday morning.
