A sailor with ties to Tulsa is helping send a U.S. Navy ship off into history.
Petty Officer Meghan Bennett spent the last two years of her service aboard CVN 65, also known as the U.S.S. Enterprise. She spent time with several other shipmates talking about their time on board.
The 51-year-old aircraft carrier is being taken from service this week, as part of a formal inactivation ceremony in Virginia.
Bennett said she's glad both of her deployments were aboard the Enterprise.
"I think that it's impossible to not develop some sort of attachment to the place you would consider home for a period of time," Bennett said.
The U.S.S. Enterprise is being replaced by the U.S.S. Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78). It's a new class of aircraft carrier that will replace the aging Nimitz class.
The Enterprise is the world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, and according to the ship's official website, it will not become a museum.
"The inactivation and de-fueling process will have major impacts on the structure of the ship. It is not cost-effective to return the ship to a condition that would support it becoming a museum. Additionally, the cost to maintain a ship as a museum is generally cost prohibitive," the Website states.
