TU Women Roll At Home, Get First Win Of The Season

Posted: Updated:

Taleya Mayberry, Tiffani Couisnard and Loren McDaniel all posted double figures to lead Tulsa to an 80-53 win over Utah Valley on Thursday night at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.  TU moved to 1-5 on the season, while UVU fell to 1-6 overall.

"I am just really proud of the fact that we not only got a win, we won both halves," Head Coach Matilda Mossman said.  "We didn't just come out in one half, we dominated in the first and second halves.  I am just really proud of our effort and the way we competed.  We were short handed tonight with two injured players, but we got great minutes from Jasmine Vasquez and Jessica McQuin off the bench.  I am just really proud of all of our players."

Mayberry netted a career-high 32 points as she went 11-for-17 from the field, including 4-of-5 from behind the arc, and hit six of seven free throws.  She also added six rebounds, four steals and three assists.  Mayberry had two previous 30-point games, coming against Oral Roberts (11-16-10) and Illinois (11-23-12).

Couisnard picked up her ninth career double-double and fourth of the year as she tied her career-best of 20 points and was one-shy of her record with 14 rebounds.  She also recorded a team-leading six steals and two blocks.

"Taleya and Tiffani are our captains and our leaders, and the people on our team look up to them," Mossman said.  "They prefer to lead by doing.  They want to do things and have others do as they do.  For the things that they do, I am okay with everyone else doing what they do.  They are great kids, great ambassadors for our University, they do the right things and they compete hard.  If the rest of the team continues to learn from them, we are in pretty good shape for the future."

McDaniel added 12 points and eight rebounds, while McQuin tallied seven points and Kadan Brady had five.

TU had a 43-36 lead in rebounds, a 4-0 advantage in blocks and a 16-10 lead in steals.  The Golden Hurricane shot 49-percent from the field, 29-percent from three-point range and 81-percent (17-21) from the charity stripe.

The Golden Hurricane jumped out to a 22-2 lead and led by as many as 22 points (33-11) in the first half at the 8:28 mark, but the Wolverines went on an 18-4 run to cut the deficit to eight with just 2:27 left in the first frame.  TU closed out the half with a 6-0 run to take a 43-29 advantage into the break.  Tulsa went 17-for-32 from field for 53.1-percentage and hit all four free throw attempts in the first half.

In the second half, TU continued to inch further ahead and had a game-high 30-point lead with just 1:15 left in the contest.  TU's only struggle in the second frame came from three-point range as the team went 0-for-5.

Tulsa will return to action on Tuesday, December 4th against Nebraska Omaha.  Game time is set for 7:00 pm in Omaha, Neb.
