ORU's Luper & Warren Earn Weekly Conference Honors

Posted: Updated:

Oral Roberts guard Warren Niles has been named the Southland Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the second consecutive week, the league office announced Monday.

Niles led the Golden Eagles in scoring in two games last week, pouring in 21 points against both Oklahoma and Missouri State. In the two games, the senior from Cincinnati, Ohio (Winton Woods H.S.), made 16 of 27 shots (59.3 percent), was 5 of 12 from 3-point range and made 5 of 6 free throws.

Niles led the team in rebounds with a career-high nine boards in a 20-point victory against Missouri State on Saturday. In the first half, he hit a transition 3-pointer at the buzzer, giving him 19 points in the half, five more than the entire Bears' roster (15). He held the Bear's leading scorer to just five points in the first half. Niles has scored in double figures in seven of the team's eight games, and has scored at least 20 points in five games.

Honorable mention this week goes to Stephen F. Austin senior forward Taylor Smith.  To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors.

Each school's sports information director nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his own player.

Oral Roberts senior guard Kevi Luper has been named Southland Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. It marks the second time this season Luper has earned this distinction.

Luper scored 40 points to go along with five steals, four rebounds and a block in Oral Roberts' tough 73-72 overtime loss to Missouri State. The senior from Adair, Okla. (Adair H.S.), shot 43.8 percent from the field (14-for-32), 44.4 percent from 3-point range (4-for-9) and a perfect 8-for-8 from the charity stripe. It was the third time in Luper's career that she has reached the 40-point plateau in a game.

Honorable mention this week goes to Sam Houston State senior forward Sequeena Thomas, Southeastern Louisiana sophomore guard Elizabeth Styles and McNeese State senior guard Caitlyn Baggett. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland women's basketball sports information directors.

Each school's sports information director nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own player.
