A petition created on the White House "We the People" website, calls for immediate attention to gun control after a elementary school shooting in Newtown, Conn. Friday, Dec. 14.
The petition was created today by a David G., after a shooter killed 20 children and 8 adults, including the gunman, at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The petition calls on the Obama administration "...to produce legislation that limits access to guns."
Currently, the petition has 116,904 signatures, which is 91,904 more than the needed 25,000 by the January 13, 2013 deadline.
The petition states, "While a national dialogue is critical, laws are the only means in which we can reduce the number of people murdered in gun related deaths."
"Powerful lobbying groups allow the ownership of guns to reach beyond the Constitution's intended purpose of the right to bear arms," according to the petition, "Therefore, Congress must act on what is stated law, and face the reality that access to firearms reaches beyond what the Second Amendment intends to achieve."
Those signing the petition "...represent a collective demand for a bipartisan discussion resulting in a set of laws that regulates how a citizen obtains a gun."
It is the sixth most popular petition on the website and the most popular petition under firearm issues.
Other petitions are calling the Obama administration to provide "a gun in every classroom. Arm every teacher and principal to defend themselves and their students during an attack." The petition has received 695 signatures.
Another requests to "seriously, respectfully and quickly work to end the violence committed by assault weapons" and has 1,050 signatures.
A petition with 2,006 signatures is requesting to "make mental health a national emergency." The petition states, "In light of the recent shootings at Clackamas Town Center mall in Portland (Oregon) and Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown (Connecticut), we believe it is time for the mental health of the nation to be taken seriously."
The White House website states that the page was created "...because we want to hear from you." If the petition receives enough support, White House staff will review and issue an official response.
