Tulsa Campus Police Up Security; Donor Pays for Another Guard

Posted: Updated:

Tulsa Public Schools Police are beefing up security in light of the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut.

In addition to 23 officers, 20 security guards, and 25 contracted guards, a private donor is offering to pay for yet another guard at an elementary school.

"That's not something we're accustomed to," said Chief of Police Gary Rudick.

Additionally, Rudick said the district is pushing to finish installing security cameras and door systems at every Tulsa Public School by the end of this year, instead of 2015 as planned. This is a part of a 2010 bond. However, in light of the tragedy at Sandy Hook, the district wants to finish equipping the remaining 52 schools as soon as possible.

"We've already had it in place. We were really kind of ahead of the curve on that, which I was really glad to see. But now with such a focus on this issue, it doesn't seem prudent to wait," said Chief Rudick.

He received a report on the Sandy Hook tragedy from a Connecticut agency Friday. He said security training is always ongoing for his staff, but he will hold a specific training day to analyze the case.
