150 Students Out with Flu, Kiefer Schools Announce Closure

KIEFER, Okla. -

Kiefer Public Schools have canceled classes for Friday after an increase in flu cases knocked out many students.

Here in Oklahoma the flu is spreading rapidly and hospitalizations have jumped from 171 to 345. In less than a week, flu deaths have increased from two to eight.

Today the school, which is located 30 minutes south of Tulsa, had dozens of calls from parents with sick children.

Kiefer has nearly 650 students, but nearly 150 are out with the flu. The district decided to have a long weekend to give sick students a chance to recover.

One mother received a phone call to pick up her 7-year-old daughter after she became sick.  Kiefer school representatives said about 25 percent of the student body is out sick.

The administration decided to close the building for a chance to clean all of the water fountains, lockers, desks and chairs.

Kids may not always look as sick as they are and parents are preparing for fever, body aches, coughing, which could come in the next couple of days.

"Hopefully I don't get it," said Amber Ham, mother of a Kiefer student, "That's what I am worried about, spending all weekend sick."

Kiefer schools will be open Monday, Jan. 14.
