TU Women Get Big Road Win

Posted: Updated:

A balanced attack and hot shooting by the Golden Hurricane propelled the Tulsa women's basketball team to a 78-56 win over Southern Miss on Sunday at the Reed Green Coliseum. Tulsa improved to 8-13 on the season and 3-5 in Conference USA, while Southern Miss fell to 12-9 and 4-4 in C-USA play.

Tulsa shot 52.5 percent from the field, including 40 percent from beyond the arc.

"It makes a difference when you make shots," commented Head Coach Matilda Mossman. "We go from shooting 13 percent in the first half at UTEP (on Thursday night) and being down one to shooting 52 percent tonight and winning by 22. Making shots makes all the difference in the world. I'm proud of our players getting five players in double figures. I was happy we were able to play everyone, and it was a solid team victory."

Leading the Hurricane charge was Taleya Mayberry, who had 17 points and five rebounds. Mayberry tied Larrissa Williams for second place on TU's all-time scoring list with 1,512 points.

Kelsee Grovey added 16 points and four assists. Ashley Clark recorded a career high 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field, while Kadan Brady tallied 10 points, all coming in the first half. Mariah Turner also had 10 points on the afternoon on 5-of-8 shooting.

Tiffani Couisnard recorded 10 rebounds while Loren McDaniel added nine boards as Tulsa outrebounded Southern Miss 42-34. The Hurricane scored 32 points in the paint, and tallied 25 points off the bench.

Southern Miss was led by Ance Celmina, who had a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds.

In the first half, the Golden Hurricane jumped out to an 18-9 lead with 13:04 remaining on the clock as Clark and Grovey each scored six points during the spurt.  Tulsa went into the locker room with a 38-31 advantage as Brady scored 10 points during the half and was 3-of-4 from beyond the arc.

Tulsa stormed out to a 21-5 run to begin the second half to assume a 59-36 lead with 11:51 left in the game.  Mayberry had 11 points in the half while Grovey added 10 points. Turner tallied eight of her 10 points in the stanza as TU outscored Southern Miss 40-25 in the second half.

Tulsa returns to action on February 10, when it hosts Tulane in a 2 p.m. contest at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. The game will be aired on Fox Sports.
