Local Animal Rights Activists Gather Outside Tulsa Walmart

Posted: Updated:

Local animal rights activists gathered outside a Tulsa Walmart Monday in protest of the store and its pork suppliers.

It happened at the store on Brookside at the 4400 block of South Peoria from 11 a.m. until noon. There passers-by could see protestors holding signs and a big inflatable pig in a cage.

"Walmart pork suppliers are guilty of horrific cruelty to animals," says Mercy For Animals' national campaign coordinator Phil Letten. "Pork sold in Walmart stores comes from pigs who are abused, neglected, and sentenced to lives of extreme confinement and deprivation in crates."

Channel 8 was at the Neighborhood Market where local demonstrators held signs to call attention to Walmart's pork suppliers practice of confining the pregnant pigs.

According to the release from the national campaign, Walmart has refused to follow the lead of retailers like Costco, Kroger, and Safeway, all of whom have agreed that gestation crates are inherently cruel.
