Tulsa Firefighter Gives Back After Battling Cancer

Posted: Updated:

A Tulsa firefighter has been in a fight for his life. Last May, Mark Meyer found out he had a 32 pound tumor in his abdomen and after surgery in New York, he's back in Tulsa and starting the next phase.

Meyer is going through chemo treatments on Monday's for about three hours. Meyer says it's not painful and hasn't really made him sick.

"It's just something that has to be done. It's part of life and you just go with it," Meyer says.

Meyer says he didn't have any signs that we was sick until the routine physical for the fire department came back and the doctors showed up at the station to talk to him.

"In the first 14 years I never missed a day until this happened. It was the first time I called in sick," Meyer says.

Throughout the last several months, Meyer keeps a positive attitude and has turned to a new mission. He started Hydrants of Hope to help children that are battling cancer.

"I just felt like, you know, this is just so unfair. I was blessed to have a good childhood. Seeing all these kids and knowing they wake up to go to a doctors appointment, get stuck with needles, and go through tests," Meyer says.

Hydrants of Hope has donated thirteen thousand dollars to St. Francis Children's Hospital to help families with expenses such as fuel to get back and forth from treatments and with prescriptions.

Meyer says it's just his nature to give back and he can't wait to get back to work, even though he doesn't know when that is.

"I miss it a lot. I would love to be able to go to work. I mean a lot of people don't like to say that or can't say that, I do," Meyer says.
