Officials Ground break New Domestic Violence Shelter for Victims

Posted: Updated:

City officials gathered in downtown Tulsa Tuesday morning to celebrate the groundbreaking of a new domestic violence center.

Tulsa Police and the Ann Patterson Dooley Family Safety Center hosted the groundbreaking ceremony for the Family Safety Center around 10 a.m. Tuesday. The event was held at TPD's headquarters downtown.

According to a release from TPD, the Family Safety Center was a project envisioned by former Mayor Bill LaFortune and ushered through Mayor Dewey Bartlett's administration.

Back in 2004, the City of Tulsa received a grant from the Department of Justice to provide a single location where victims and families could receive services for domestic violence in a safe environment. Today that environment is located at 3010 S. Harvard Ave.

The move from the current location was made possible by the generous donations from the City of Tulsa, TPD, Tulsa County and many private donors who support the Family Safety Center and its efforts, according to the release. The projected date for the project to be completed is September 16, 2013.

At the event were Tulsa County Commissioner Karen Keith, former Mayor Kathy Taylor and several other members of the Tulsa community.
