Freshman outfielder Hunter Haley tagged up and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by junior infielder Matt Oberste to push the No. 11-ranked University of Oklahoma baseball to a 2-1 win in 10 innings over Kansas Friday at L. Dale Mitchell Park, marking OU's 13th straight win and fourth victory in extras in the last eight games.
The triumph over the Jayhawks (14-10, 2-3 Big 12) lifted the Sooners (25-4, 5-0 Big 12) to their second straight Big 12 series victory to open conference play. OU is off to its first 5-0 conference start since 1993 and earned its seventh walk-off win of the season.
"I don't think we played really well early on, we had some bad at bats," OU head coach Sunny Golloway said. "I don't want to take anything away from Kansas, I thought Taylor Thomas was exceptional on the mound, and I thought Dillon Overton was outstanding. But, the four errors are a little concerning to us, so we'll go back to work tomorrow before the game a little bit and bear down a little bit. We'll be ready to play better tomorrow, but if you can play bad and still win a game, that's pretty special. I thought we pitched well but didn't play well."
Overton lasted 6.1 innings and gave up just four hits and one unearned run. The southpaw struck out six and walked two. He was matched by Kansas' Thomas, who allowed one run on five hits over 8.2 innings.
Jacob Evans relieved Overton in the seventh and pitched the final 3.2 frames for OU. He allowed no runs on no hits and struck out two to improve to a perfect 5-0 on the season.
Haley got Oklahoma's final push started in the 10th with a leadoff single through the right side. Senior infielder Jack Mayfield and freshman outfielder Craig Aikin followed with back-to-back bunt singles to load the bases. Oberste provided the game-winning RBI one out later.
KU got their lone run in the seventh thanks to an OU error that allowed Ka'liana Eldredge to score from second after he walked.
Freshman infielder Kolbey Carpenter landed the game's first punch by smashing his first career home run, a one-out dinger over the wall in left center in the bottom of the second.
Oklahoma goes for the series sweep over Kansas Saturday at L. Dale Mitchell Park. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. CT. The game will be televised live on FOX Sports Southwest Plus and FOX College Sports.
